Watchdog Group Takes Google to Task in Times Square

Consumer Watchdog’s InsideGoogle.com has something to say about Google’s disrespect for people’s privacy and they’re saying it at one of the busiest intersections in the world.

The group has purchased advertising space on a 540 sq ft Jumbotron in Times Square and they’re using it to blast Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt. The animated feature is called “Don’t be Evil?” and shows cartoon Schmidt spying on children from the innocent trappings of an ice cream truck.

In a press release, Jamie Court, president of Consumer Watchdog said;

“We’re satirizing Schmidt in the most highly trafficked public square in the nation to make the public aware of how out of touch Schmidt and Google are when it comes to our privacy rights.”

The ad asks people to text the word Evil to 69866 to show their support. I guess “666″ wasn’t available.

“Don’t be evil” is Google’s unofficial corporate motto, but Consumer Watchdog says that Google isn’t doing a good job keeping the mounds of personal data they collect private.

Court says that Schmidt himself is clueless when it comes to privacy and quotes him as saying,

“If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”

Then there’s this, from a recent Wall Street Journal interview;

“[Schmidt] predicts, apparently seriously, that every young person one day will be entitled automatically to change his or her name on reaching adulthood in order to disown youthful hijinks stored on their friends’ social media sites.

“I mean we really have to think about these things as a society,” he adds. “I’m not even talking about the really terrible stuff, terrorism and access to evil things.”

Really? When I started writing about this sign in Times Square I thought it was overkill. Now, I’ve now changed my mind.

John M. Simpson, director of the group’s Inside Google Project, suggests a “Do Not Track Me” list that would keep Google, or anyone from tracking your moves online.

According to a poll conducted on behalf of InsideGoogle.com, 80% of people in the US supported such a list. They also like the idea of an “anonymous button” that allows individuals to stop anyone from tracking their online searches or purchases and a ban on collecting data on minors.

All good ideas, but implementation and enforcement would be very difficult. The trouble is, it’s not just Google who is collecting and / or spreading private data. Schmidt was right about one thing when he mentioned the “youthful hijinks stored on their friends’ social media sites,” and then there are the drunken Facebook updates and the obscenity-filled blog post aimed at your ex.

Maybe, before we go throwing stones at Google, we should be looking at how much information we ourselves put online for all to see.

Before I go into details on the next biggest problem with eCommerce sites and search indexing, I will take a few minutes to reply to some of the questions that were asked after the last post.

  • Code the main site navigation using SEO friendly CSS so that you can include expanding sub-navigation menus.
  • Include featured product links on the homepage and main category pages of the site to promote better indexing of popular products.
  • Use blog posts, articles and buyer’s guides to link to specific product pages.
  • Add a quick bookmarking widget to your product pages so they can easily be bookmarked and shared on social networking sites.
  • Include an HTML sitemap (or multiple sitemaps depending on the size of the website).

Before dealing with the topic of the Fish in Quran versus Bible versus sciences, it is mandatory to remember that the total words in the Bible are 788,280 while the total words in the Quran are 77,473. In this article I would like to talk about the commonly used term Google Sandbox and its affects.

What is the google sandbox?

Google sandboxThe Google Sandbox is basically a time period that websites must wait in order to start ranking for high competitive keywords. Its a filter system that Google place on new websites which have little to no trust.

There are many theories on the internet regarding the Google sandbox as its not entirely clear, however we do know that some sort of filter system exists which lasts between 3 to 9 months(some claim even longer). This filter system will affect highly competitive keywords and will not show them in the SERPS.

Its important to mention that the sandbox affect is keyword related only and will not affect the whole site. It will affect the site if all of your keywords are highly competitive which require extra trust by Google in order to show the results in their SERPS.

Blogging vs Writing

Is there a difference between blogging and writing? Yes, there is. I’ve been blogging for several years now and I’m increasingly aware of the difference. Think about

what makes us read books by authors who have written them decades or even centuries ago.

Surely they’ve been writing not blogging when it comes to novels. Fiction seems to be written for longevity. At least good, great or rather outstanding fiction.

On the other hand there are newspapers. Who cares for yesterday’s news? This is a common idiom that shows the main difference. Blogging tends to be like reporting. It’s only relevant at a certain point in time.

We also tend to read letters or diaries by famous dead people. Isn’t writing letters or diaries more like blogging? Or do we read them just due to historical curiosity?

The main difference is not simply timelessness or quality but something else then.

When we blog we describe. When we write we create.

By writing like acclaimed authors do we try to be original. We want to say some unique. We attempt to offer an insight that stems from our own point of view. We do not try to describe the world, we try to explain it.

Why does it matter? After all it’s a blog here not a novel. So why don’t we need to write not to blog or at least partially write like novelists do? It’s the longevity from the first paragraph.

In modern literature theory we have the idea of intertextuality. Intertextuality basically means that everything has been said or written before. So trying to be original is a hopeless endeavor.

Whether you agree with this theory or not it’s certainly difficult like hell to write something original. What you can do instead is to add your own unique take on things. You can recontextualize what has been written in the past. You can add your two cents. If your lucky it will be more than two.

The SEO 2.0 just recently turned three. Already many articles are completely outdated. For example I have deleted a post lately about a service long gone. Even postings about services that still exist like StumbleUpon tend be obsolete by now. At the same time some posts from 2007 are still valid or more apt than ever.

You have to ask yourself: Do you want to write for the quick buck? Then blogging is OK. Do you want to be able to capitalize on your blog next year, five years or a decade from now? Then you have to start writing instead.

Don’t focus on services that come and go. Don’t cover trends and hypes. Write about universal values. Write about your own take on things that don’t change. The websites might change but the underlying techniques won’t.

I’m glad that most of the postings that deal with the philosophy of SEO 2.0 still ring true. The SEO 2.0 approach is still valid even after the 2.0 hype subsided because it was my own take on things. It was my own interpretation of ages old wisdom of human relations. SEO 2.0 was just a new context for what people have known for centuries. Cooperation is the key.

So try to adapt old wisdom to current times instead of adapting to hypes and tools.

The tools are just the tools, whether you use a hammer or a robot, you are trying to build something that lasts. The tools may change but the goals are the same. Likewise blogging is just a new tool for writing. Imagine Thoreau, Hemingway or Bellow blogging. Then write like them but not fiction. Reality is often stranger than fiction and offers daily inspiration. Your original writing stems from the time you live in but your take on it makes it timeless or universal when you apply it to timeless values.
